EVERYDAY SMILE && MAVERICK HARRIS
SPRING WORKOUT
Maverick led the chestnut mare to the turf track early that morning. The rain water from the night before was still sticking to the green blades and he swore as the moisture soaked through his worn out tall boots and into his thick socks. The clouds had started to burn off and the track workers confirmed that it was dry enough to allow horses out on the long stretch. The earlier the better, was always Mav's opinion on running the horses. He found that they were less wound up if worked first thing in the morning. And not to mention once the sun finally showed it's face it would get muggy and humid, something he hated more than the rain.
Smiles was chomping on her bit repeatedly, driving her jockey crazy. She hated being cooped up for too long in her stall, and her last work was slightly too long ago for her comfort zone. Maverick glared at the red mare, slightly annoyed with her antics. He had to admit though, she was one hell of a runner when her attention was focused on something other than her boredom. She sent her point home by promptly sending gravel flying by pawing when they stopped to check the girth one last time. Alright! We're going! Yeesh! Maverick slapped the mare on the shoulder to get her attention away from digging a hole to China, and continued towards the mounting block.
One in the saddle, Mav pushed the mare into a working trot quickly, eager to get Smiles on her way. She snorted, still chomping away at the bit, more than ready to run. They worked the stretch at various gates before heading around to the backstretch, ready to run the last bit of the workout. Eight furlongs was a hefty distance but for Smiles it was a breeze. Even after the longer distance, she would be bouncing off the ground on her way back to the barn.
They rounded to the last turn before Mav urged her into a gallop. Smiles sprung easily into her stride and settled at a fast pace, showing her preceder side by pushing an imaginary front runner into a quick clip. Mav had to hold her back slightly so she wouldn't get burned out too early in the distance. The chestnut mare did not like to hold back, but listened obediently, knowing her chance to really run would be coming up soon.
Before long they were approaching another horse and jockey just starting their gallop going into the backstretch of the track. Maverick felt a wave of determination rush over him as soon as he recognized the rider: Clinton. The older jockey was sitting astride Majestic Hero, the big bay stallion who was notorious for being a strong closer. Grinning, Maverick urged Smiles on to catch up to the other pair. Drawing up alongside Jester and Clinton, Maverick saluted the other jockey before urging his mount even faster as they passed by.
Fully aware that the stallion would catch them in the next couple strides, Maverick yipped at the mare to get going. Smiles gladly stretched out into a faster lead, knowing that she now had a competitor to run against. Just like he had predicted, Jester was on them within a furlong, ready to challenge the red mare. Around the final turn they came, the two horses neck and neck. Smiles was not about to give in to the stallion, she was determined to win this mini race.
Maverick urged the mare even more and soon they were drawing away from Jester and Clinton. Only a few strides out, Smiles started to open up a lead on the bay stallion and whizzed past the line, two strides in front of her competitor. Satisfied with her run, the mare pulled up obediently and strutted her way off the track. Maverick shook his head, this mare had a lot of style and man does she know how to use it.
